Twenty-Five

Aderyn continued to watch through half-lidded eyes as the corner of the lowest steel sheet, the one meeting the ground, slowly curved up like someone was peeling it away from the wall. It made a dark gap through which something small emerged. Aderyn immediately Assessed it.

Name: Kobold Sneaker [1]

Type: Abomination

Power Level: 2

Attack(s): weapon x1, bite x1

Immune to: none

Resistant to: bludgeoning weapon damage, elemental fire damage

Vulnerable to: sunlight, daylight, sunburst

Kobolds are reptilian creatures that lair deep underground in elaborate warrens centered on their matriarch’s den. They avoid direct contact with their enemies, preferring to attack from a distance and under the protection of shadows. Kobolds have a reputation among other monsters for craftiness and cunning, and are known for their clever traps. Kobold sneakers are particularly good at moving silently and hiding. They use their skills to evaluate threats to the warren.

Kobolds are tool-using creatures and have the ability to activate some magic items. A kobold in possession of a <Flaming Lance> is nothing to be trifled with despite its low level.

Aderyn continued to hold still, though she wished she knew if the mention of a <Flaming Lance> was coincidental. They’d assumed those devices were missing because the Spellcrafters had removed them, but what if something else had gotten to them first?

The kobold sneaker hesitated just past the panel, tilting its head as if sniffing the air. It was no bigger than a five-year-old child, but there was nothing cute or childlike about it. Its lizard-like head was shaped like a wedge, with large, deep-set dark eyes under heavy brow ridges. It wore no clothes, and in the low light, its rough skin appeared to be a bright blue. Its thin, whippy tail curled and uncurled like it operated independently of its owner, apparently providing balance so the creature could walk upright.

Just as Aderyn noticed that, the kobold dropped to all fours and crept forward like a skittish cat, approaching Livia, who slept closest to where it had entered. Aderyn’s hand closed on her belt knife. It wasn’t weighted for throwing, but she had [Improvised Distraction] at a high enough level it wouldn’t matter.

When the kobold sneaker got within five feet of Livia, it slowed its advance, sniffing the ground more like a dog than a cat. Aderyn flung the knife. The swish of the knife flying through the air alerted the kobold, who reared up so the blade took it below the chin, embedding itself in the monster’s throat. The kobold staggered back, clutching the knife. Aderyn leaped to her feet and shouted, “Look out! Monster!”

The others came alert immediately, grabbing weapons or magic items. Aderyn darted past Livia and grabbed the kobold, which convulsed once and then sagged in her grip. “It’s dead,” she told her friends. “But there might be others. Look, that’s where it came in.”

Weston crouched beside the panel and peered behind it. He let out a pained cry and jerked his hand away from the steel. “It’s hot!”

The others joined him. Weston sucked on his finger and gingerly touched its tip to the metal.
